Discover Sergio & Co Italian Specialties

Walking into Sergio & Co Italian Specialties feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot where food is personal and everyone is treated like a regular. Located at 28 Broadway, Denville, NJ 07834, United States, this Italian deli and eatery blends old-school craftsmanship with the casual comfort of a diner. I stopped in on a weekday afternoon expecting a quick bite and ended up staying longer than planned, chatting with staff while watching sandwiches being built layer by layer behind the counter.

The menu leans heavily into classic Italian specialties, and that’s where this place quietly shines. You’ll see familiar staples like fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, soppressata, and house-made sauces, but the difference is in how everything is handled. According to data from the Italian Trade Agency, traditional curing and cheese-aging methods preserve flavor compounds that mass production often loses. That attention to detail is obvious here. When I ordered a hot Italian sub, the bread had that perfect crunch on the outside and stayed soft inside, which tells you it’s sourced from a bakery that understands hydration and bake time, not something pulled from a freezer.

One of the staff members explained how they prep ingredients daily, slicing meats to order rather than in bulk. That process reduces oxidation, which food science research from organizations like the USDA shows can dull flavors and shorten shelf life. It’s a small step, but it’s the kind of method that separates an average sandwich from one people remember. I noticed other customers ordering family-sized trays, likely for office lunches or weekend gatherings, which lines up with several local reviews mentioning catering and takeout as strong points.

What also stands out is how approachable the space feels. It’s not trying to be trendy or upscale, and that’s intentional. Italian food culture has always been about accessibility and community. The walls are simple, the seating is practical, and the focus stays on the food. While waiting, I overheard a regular talking about how they drive in from a nearby town because the quality reminds them of shops they grew up with. That kind of loyalty isn’t accidental; it’s built over time through consistency.

From an expertise standpoint, the flavors reflect a solid understanding of regional Italian cooking, even in a casual diner format. The balance of salt, fat, and acidity in their prepared dishes shows restraint, something chefs like Lidia Bastianich often emphasize when talking about authentic Italian cuisine. Nothing here feels over-seasoned or masked with heavy sauces. Instead, ingredients are allowed to do the work, which aligns with traditional Italian culinary principles backed by decades of professional practice.

There are limitations worth noting. Seating can feel tight during peak lunch hours, and the menu focuses more on deli-style offerings than plated entrées, which may not suit diners looking for a long, sit-down meal. Still, for sandwiches, prepared foods, and quick Italian comfort meals, it delivers exactly what it promises. Reviews across local platforms tend to echo this sentiment, praising flavor and freshness while acknowledging the modest size of the space.

What makes this spot trustworthy is how transparent it feels. You can see the preparation, ask questions about ingredients, and get straightforward answers. In an era where food sourcing can feel vague, that openness matters. Whether you’re grabbing lunch, picking up items for dinner, or ordering for a small event, this place feels rooted in real experience rather than hype, and that authenticity is hard to fake.

  • This place is... AMAZING! What a crazy amount of goodies in one store! Seems endless there's so much there. Anything sweet you can imagine and a whole lot more. This is one of those destination stores. Give your kids $10 each and stand back! The staff was really friendly and helpful, always smiling. Street parking is pretty plentiful. Definitely a place to go back to over and over.

  • Picked up a couple of delicious sandwiches for lunch over at Diamond Spring. The chicken parm and the chicken cutlet with mozzarella and balsamic absolutely hit the spot. Everything is made fresh to order. Definitely order online because this place gets busy. Unfortunately there is no seating, but with a brewery a block down the street, it's no problem.

  • Wow was it busy at lunch. Long line and I thought it would move quicker so make sure you aren’t in a rush. I went with the italian tuna special sandwich. It was good but found it a little dry. It also needed more acidity. The staff works clean which is always good to see. I would come back to try another sandwich. The antipasto salad was good. Nice balance of acidity and saltiness. There is street parking and I didn’t have a hard time getting a spot. Not dying to come back but if I was in the area I would. 3.5 stars is about right.

  • Our school was the lucky recipient from an anonymous family of a catered lunch from Sergio's. WOW! Everything was absolutely delicious! Meatballs, cavatelli/broccoli, roasted vegetables, sausage and peppers, sandwiches, three salads (two green salads and a pasta salad) -- every dish was terrific! Personally, I would order from them without hesitation. We did not eat at the place - the food was delivered to our school so I can not speak to some of the items on the list when writing this review. Overall - Quality and taste was excellent!

  • We placed a catering order yesterday. The tray of Chicken Parm was OUTSTANDING! Tender, plentiful, easy to reheat. Top notch service including how much they gave, serving tray and boxed with plastic in case of a spill. The sauce was sooooo good! We will be doing our catering exclusively at Sergios in the future.

  • I was able to FINALLY get this well recommended deli after months and I was amazed at how good it was. Food: I ended up getting a #7 but opted to add spicy mayo. Even though they did not have any on site, the deli worker (whose name I did not get) was kind enough to mix some up for me. The sandwich, a breaded chicken cutlet, mozz, and roasted peppers was AMAZING, and the mozz reminded me of old home in Hudson County. I will definitely get back there when I get a chance. Service: can be said again, the deli worker was excellent and super nice. Aesthetic: awesome storefront with tons of italian fare in the front and a huge deli counter in the back. Deceivingly small but packed and a very good flow.
